About C. V. Sridhar
C. V. Sridhar (died 20 October 2008) was a South Indian screenwriter and film director. Sridhar hailed from an agricultural family in Chitthamur, a village near Madurantakam, Tamil Nadu. He studied in St. Josephs School in Chengalpattu, where he wrote and staged plays even when he was in Grade 7. He entered films as a dialogue writer when his play Ratha Pasam was adapted as a film. He made his debut as a director with Kalyanaparisu.
His combination with Makkal Thilagam MGR, Urimai Kural and Meenava Nanban were big hits for the legend in his later days.
He started his own production company Chitralaya in 1961 and made a series of commercially successful films like Nenjil Ore Alayam,Thenilavu. In all his films he used the stars, melodrama and melodious songs combination. He has directed films in Tamil,Hindi, Telugu and Kannada. Kadhalikka Neramillai (No time to love) was one of the greatest block buster movies of Tamil film history made by Sridhar and later the same was remade in Hindi with musical legend Kishore Kumar. Sridhar handled all kind of actors with applying his style, but at the same time he never forgot to give a perfect treatment as per the image of the superstars like MGR and Rajini. Sridhar launched the career of Dr. J. Jayalalitha in Veneer Adai (White dress) which was a social trendsetter of its time.
In 1997 when Sridhar was in poor health, Rajinikanth offered financial help to tide him over, Sridhar always a man of high ideals flatly refused the charity. He gave the same reply to director P.Vasu who was his disciple. Sridhar whose career spanned four decades is credited with understanding the pulse of the public and providing great movies in tune with the times. Sridhar who had the audience in splits in kadhalika Neramillai took his audience to the other extreme in Nenjam oru aalayam with Kalyan Kumar. The same movie was remade in Hindi with Rajendra Kumar) Meena Kumari.
He brought out the best in comedians T.R. Ramachandran, KA Thangavelu, Nagesh and introduced Murthy in Veneer Adai. Murthy is now called Veneer Adai Murthy after the fame he received from his performance in the movie. Murthy is now a TV and Movie comedian par excellence.
Sridhar was a pathbreaking pioneer whose works are timeless testomonials to his genius.
